I do not draw anything like regularly, so I have a hard time calling myself an artist, but since getting myself out there encourages me to keep trying, here it is - a pile of stuff.

Have a neurotic fur-child who's scared of cold. He'll cling to you like a magnet, and his body heat will sustain you!

(Seriously, though, it's hard to let my anxiety get carried away when I'm simultaneously laughing at & reassuring my boy at every draft & ice noise. We have a warm cozy apartment, I'm just going stir-crazy from the temps being too low for me to manage Outside way too frequently in recent weeks.)

So The Vox posted this article on hopepunk - it's pretty fun reading, but the real gold is the list of hopepunk media recs at the end! I'd been trying to figure out how to find books I'd like on my Libby app now that I'm paring down my previous reading list - and there's also music, tv/movies, and podcasts I can listen to while knitting/spinning!

Look! I've been getting nice work done on 2/3 projects I currently have on spindles so far :)

details for these spins can be found at their respective project pages on Ravelry - voidfish for the blue/purple and sea glass for the white - although I'm happy to talk about them more if people are curious!

our downstairs neighbors are listening to their music loud enough to make things in the walls buzz, AGAIN. each measure of music is like a tiny oyster fork flung directly into my brain. i was supposed to do things today but apparently not :/

So one of the nice things about the resurgence of Ao3 discourse on tumblr towards the end of 2018 was that everyone came out of the woodwork to talk up the Archive's mission and features - I learned a LOT about what I could do. I'd been flirting for months with the idea of polishing & publishing some of our massive, massive amount of fantroll RP, but now I'm also considering publishing some of the writing I've done adjacent to a D&D campaign or two... and, of course, thinking about actually publishing fic makes me come up with ideas more often. I ran out of time this holiday season to post a Christmas Tolkien fic, but I had an idea this morning, talking to my sis about the books we've both been reading recently, for a classic 5+1 covering a "missing scene" in the second Aubrey/Maturin novel, so! It's good to feel like I might be participating in fandom more, for the first time in coming up on four years. Now for the follow-through.

so for NYE, we had friends over for a quiet night of crafting, including making hand-painted skeins from some white sock yarn & food coloring. mine's finally dry enough to skein up and take pictures!

(i'm experimenting w/linking photos hosted on a publicly visible ravelry entry - if this doesn't work on your end, let me know!)

So this evening I spun closer to 30 minutes, starting the second cop on my sea glass spinning project (link to Ravelry project page.) I hadn't been making tons of progress on this lately - partly bc I hadn't been spinning hardly at all during the holiday knit madness, partly because I'm finding this fiber blend more difficult to work with than anticipated. I'm determined to push through, though, because I want to see what my ideal end-use product looks like!

Part of managing my guilt-spiral/perfectionist tendencies is not being too harsh with myself in setting goals - there was a LOT of damage I did to my brain with that, primarily as a student but also in other parts of my life. I still like setting goals, though! Just... gentle ones. So for this year:
  • I want to make a good effort to participate in #spin15aday - that is, do at least 15 minutes of handspinning every day. This seems to be primarily an Instagram thing, but since I currently only use Insta for business stuff & my spinning is definitely not professional quality yet, it might just be something I do for myself rather than participating in a tag for it or anything :/ unless y'all really want to hear about my spinning all the time.
  • I want to clear all my WIP sweaters off needles, and knit my sample sweater I purchased yarn for today. Casting on other sweaters will be great, but I'm not going to push myself to finish any more than the six total that would make for this year (unless I get more store orders for sweaters, which is definitely a possibility).
  • I want to improve my dyeing skills enough to be selling skeins of hand-dyed yarn in our store by the end of the year.
  • I want to save enough of my own income to buy myself a fiber tool of some kind that I earned myself!
You may notice a theme here. I have other things I'd like to do with my life, but the fiber crafts really are turning into my calling, and the thing I like to challenge myself with. Hopefully I'll write some more next year. I have some health and family goals that I would LOVE to meet but have only dubious control over. I have my dailies/habits/tasks in Habitica, and I don't want to completely stop doing art or baking. But fiber is my resolutions this year.

I may be stuck in the holiday knitting sweatshop still, but I'm proud of myself for lowering my standards re:deadlines, and my wife [personal profile] damnfooltalk is bringing me groceries & a latte, so everything will be okay :)

Okay, so I'm getting a little bit of the hang of this. I still haven't followed many people, and I still haven't poked my head in communities at all, but I feel like I have the general lay of the land. I kind of bluescreened on interests when I was setting up the account, but I'm adding them bit by bit over today - anything I list as an interest is stuff I'd talk about/reblog/share on any of my other social media, basically.

Hi! I, um, have no idea how to use this thing :) I missed out on LJ, and I've gotten really into fandom on tumblr but, well, tumblr. So. Trying this on for size. I'll be looking up tutorials and figuring out how this works, probably more actively after the holiday season ends than during.
